What is the AWS Cloud?

Amazon Web Services, abbreviated to AWS, is arguably the most well-known public cloud. In 2006, Amazon – the world’s largest e-commerce chain – took its first steps into the cloud computing market with an on-demand cloud platform, developed in-house. AWS is said to have started as a service for hosting Amazon’s own webshop. Today it is estimated that Amazon serves more than one third of the global cloud market. Because AWS has been around for some time and has evolved considerably, it is not only the largest platform but also offers solutions to almost every use case.

Regions

AWS has a global presence in more than sixty ‘availability zones’ within twenty geographical regions. The number of locations where AWS is available is ever increasing. In the coming years, fifteen new availability zones and five more regions will be added. Click here for a current overview.

EC2 Virtual Servers

Used by Netflix and NASA, among others. Makes cloud computing easy for developers due to its simple web interface and offers full control over the resizable computing capacity.

Amazon S3

For storage in the cloud. Provides storage for any type of business and virtually any type of data. S3 (Simple Storage Service) is designed for an uptime of up to 99.999999999%. Little wonder that millions of applications worldwide use S3 on a daily basis.

AWS Lambda

Enables serverless computing. With AWS Lambda you can execute code without provisioning or the managing of servers. You only pay for the calculated time you use – there is no charge if your code is not running.
